There’s nothing more important to most mothers than child safety. The idea of your son or daughter getting hurt is the thing that keeps you up at night worrying. That’s why it’s so important to get child safety right in your own home, and it’s not as difficult as you might think.

There are lots of things that can go wrong out there in the big bad world, but what happens under your own roof is under your control. And the home can be as dangerous as any other environment out there. Here are a few things you can do to improve child safety in your home.

Keep the Windows Locked

Keeping windows locked is vital if it’s possible for your child to climb up to an open window. And this is even more important if you live on a high floor. To make sure your child doesn’t fall from an open window, it’s always best to keep them locked. If you have a balcony, keep the door to it locked as well.

Make Sure Cleaning Products Are in a Safe Place

Children getting access to dangerous cleaning products and chemicals is never a good thing. They’re incredibly dangerous and can do a lot of damage to adults and children alike. It’s best to keep them locked away or somewhere your child has no chance of gaining access to. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Install Fire and Radiator Guards

Small things like installing radiator guards are the kind of idea not a lot of parents think of. But radiators can cause nasty burns to young children if they’re not guarded. By making sure they can’t reach the radiator, you make sure they don’t bet burned. The same can be said if you have an open fire, make sure it’s guarded.

Don’t Leave Wires or Cords Trailing on the Floor

If there’s a wire dangling down and your small child is near it, the chances are they’re going to pull on it. This can be disastrous if something then falls on the child. Don’t leave wires near your children and if you have wires that are damaged or frayed, make sure you replace them quickly.

Make Sure Your Smoke Detectors Are Working

One of the most important safety features in any home is the smoke detector. If the worst happens and there’s a fire in your home, you need to get out quickly. So, install a smoke detector on every floor of the house and test them regularly to make sure they’re working. Think about installing carbon monoxide detectors too.

Be Careful Around Animals

Young children are often very interested in the family pet, but the pet might not take to them so quickly. You should make sure that your child is supervised whenever they interact with the family pet. And if the pet doesn’t like children or can get nasty quickly, you should consider keeping them apart until your child’s older.

It might seem like a long list of tasks, but most of it is just common sense. As long as you follow these tips and keep your children supervised, your home will be safe for them.
