Whether you are a parent or not, there is a number of things that you will need to consider when buying a brand new car.

However, when you are a parent there are a few other things that you will need to consider.

When I decided to go out and buy a brand new car from the GK Group, the thing that confused me the most was the choice… so much choice. This is why I have produced this quick guide to help other Mums in a similar situation, or are considering buying a brand new car.

I split my thinking into two different steps:

One) Buying a car
Two) The cost of Running a car

Step One: Buying a car

The size of your family unit will dictate what type of car you have. Of course, if you have a large family, a Super Mini probably won’t be the right car for you.

Most car manufacturers will offer family sized cars, these are normally hatchbacks or estates, while others also offer MPVs and 4x4s.

The thing I noticed when looking at these different types of cars is how much they differ between manufacturers. For example, I looked at a generous sized Ford Focus, which was slightly bigger than other manufacturers like Vauxhall. Ford also offers a Ford Kuga and C-Max which ticks off the 4×4 and MPV style cars.

Once you’ve decided on the type of car you would like, one that fits in with your family, the next stage is to refine your search.

Have a think about what features you want on the car. Here’s a few that I considered:

– Parking Sensors

– Fuel Type

IsoFix for Car Seat

– Automatic or Manual Gearbox

– Built in Sat Nav / Hands-Free

Obviously my own requirements could be very different from your own. These extra features are well worth considering, as you can use them to start tailoring the perfect brand new car for you and your family. For me, it was all about making my life easier.

Step Two: The cost of Running a car

So, at this point you think you’ve found your perfect car. One you can afford, and that meets all of your requirements. Now you must think about how much this car will cost to run.

Some things you may want to consider are:

– Fuel consumption

– Reliability

– Car Tax

– Insurance

– Cost of breakdown/Repair

All of these things can be found on a number of websites. It’s important that you do your research.

So, at this point you’ll have all the information to hand to help you buy a brand new car. You know about the different styles of cars, what features they offer, how much they cost to run, and how much they will cost you to insure.

Now for the test drive.

Once you’ve decided on your car and the features, take it for a spin. Make sure that it’s right for you.

If you fall in love with it, you know it’s right for you and your family.
