Everytime you make the decision to pick up your bike as opposed to other forms of transportation you’re doing your small part to save the world. There are a lot of reasons bikes are the better choice when deciding what transportation to choose. From the cost benefits, to the health benefits, here are some of the main reasons you should be picking up your bike, leaving your car keys at home the next time you’re heading out.

The Healthier Choice

There are countless reasons why biking is the healthier choice vs. driving to your destination. Biking is a form of “low impact exercising” meaning that it causes you to exert your body much less than some other forms of working out. Injuries when working out can happen quite often, but when biking you’re exercising with low risk to your muscles or joints. Another benefit to biking is you can go at your own pace, meaning as you bike to your destination you can choose to bike uphill, downhill, faster, slow, etc… Biking is a type of “go at your own pace” exercise that allows for you to get fit at the speed you decide to take. Another benefit to biking, is that your accomplishing a goal (getting fit), while going somewhere. One of the big issues with working out is that it can get boring after a while. With biking, you’re not only getting fit, but you’re accomplishing your goal of reaching a destination.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

You may hear a lot of people around Canada talking about their carbon footprint. This is something that is unique to every individual and company. Biking is saving the environment because it’s not releasing any greenhouse gasses. When you drive around your city in your vehicle, your vehicle is emitting emissions while you’re doing so. Each liter of gas can produce a significant amount of CO2, which is adding to your carbon footprint.

Taking public transportation long distances can add to your footprint, as can flying in a plane. This is because of the sheer amount of CO2 emissions that are released with these modes of transportation.

Biking is saving the environment. It’s also why there are so many cities adding bike rental stations around them. It allows people to pedal their way to various sites and attractions without having to rent a car, take a bus, or hail a cab.

Eliminate More Parking Lots

Approximately 20 bikes fit into the space that is designed for a car. When you look at the number of parking lots around a particular city, you will find that they’re taking up entirely too much space. Beautiful natural land is being cleared simply so that people can find another place to park their car. By visiting a bike shop, you can find a bike that you love and park it around town instead of demanding another parking lot by your favourite store or marketplace.

Biking is saving the environment in a number of other ways, too. Bikes can reduce traffic, combat noise pollution, and keeps the land free for nature. Biking is healthier for you, too, so it allows you to cut down on healthcare costs. Additionally, you’re less likely to travel far, so you keep all of your shopping local – and that’s a great way to boost your local economy.

It’s important to find ways to bike more frequently. When you bike to work, your favorite restaurant, or anywhere else, you are doing your part to help the environment. As biking becomes more mainstream, it helps on a larger scale.
